Anker

Fire pit from December 2022

Anker is a fire pit based on the Sustainable Development Goal number 11; Sustainable cities & communities.

The design is inspired by my hometown, Skagen, which is placed at the top of Denmark. Skagen is very dedicated to the fishing industry and the town is therefore highly defined by it. In honor of this community, I wanted to create a symbol for Skagen that the citizens can relate to and also take pride in as both an outdoor activity and as a sculpture.

The name Anker is the danish word for anchor which defines the fishing industry in Skagen and religiously means hope. If you look closely at the front of the firepit, perhaps you can spot a similarity between an anchor and Ankers shape?

The cooking grate makes it possible for children to join the cooking process from start to end. With its height, they are at eye-level with the firepit, in contrast to the kitchen table, making sure that the whole party is involved.

The top of Anker has a protecting function from wind which makes the ignition phase easier. It also makes the heat from the fire centered, spreading it out to the user rather than upwards.

Although the firepit is inspired by Skagen, it is also relevant for other cities making them gain more social- and outdoor activities in green public areas. The goal is to create an inviting space for everyone with families being the main target group.

Creating a warm and cozy atmosphere, Anker makes people interact and attracts children with its playful and sculptural design.
